Binding locks the price regardless of actual weight. Non-binding is an estimate — final charge is based on actual weight/services. Non-binding not-to-exceed caps the increase. Always get it in writing.

In the USA it is typically $150–$250 per sq ft for mid-range ($150k–$250k). Red flags include a large cash deposit over 20%, no written binding or not-to-exceed estimate, no in-home or video survey, vague valuation or insurance, no physical address or license number, and pressure to sign quickly. Get the estimate in writing, check reviews, and compare the mover’s sheet to your calculated breakdown before you book.

Commonly forgotten items are address updates for banks and subscriptions, utility shutoff/turn-on dates, measuring doorways and elevators, parking permits for the truck, a box for essentials, chargers and medical items, and returning keys. Also forget to check insurance coverage and to photograph electronics before disconnecting. The kitchen is usually the hardest room to pack — fragile dishes, glasses, small appliances, pantry items, and many small boxes. It takes the most time and packing material. Pack non-essentials first, use dish barrels and dividers for glassware, and keep a separate essentials bag for the first night.

Pack the least-used, non-essential items first: seasonal clothes, decor, books, photos, and rarely used kitchen gadgets. Leave everyday essentials, chargers, toiletries, and documents for the last box. Label clearly and create a first-night box so you can find what you need without unpacking everything at once.
